About Mountain Camp Marin: Values and Philosophy

Mountain Camp Marin is a co-ed summer day camp for camper entering grades K – 8th.  We are located at the beautiful Mark Day School in San Rafael, California.

Mountain Camp Marin’s program is designed to build confidence, grow independence, encourage friendships and develop important social and emotional learning skills. In today’s hectic and high-tech world, we believe a back-to-basics approach to outdoor recreation and plain ol’ fashion “fun” is crucial to building a child’s positive self-image and understanding of community. Building on our 3 year research study with the Stanford Graduate School of Education on the beneficial impacts of the camp experience on child development, Mountain Camp Marin works to create the feeling of an overnight camp experience in a day camp program. We offer opportunities for our campers to choose their own activities, giving them agency over their day.

We believe a quality summer camp experience provides education, challenge, achievement and acceptance. Our unique atmosphere allows children to learn in a fun and safe environment that encourages independence while nurturing lasting friendships.

Our Values

Mountain Camp Marin is committed to making diversity, equity, and inclusion part of everything we do—from how we hire and train our staff to how we support our campers. We know that a diverse, equitable, and inclusive camp experience is a more life-changing and successful one. We embrace diversity of background, perspective, culture, and experience, and together with our staff, work to ensure that every camper, no matter their background and lived experience, feels a sense of belonging at camp.

Our vision is to illuminate the finest in individual campers and staff through the camp experience to collectively make the world a better place. To do this, we return to our values with every decision regarding our program.

Integrity is paramount, we prioritize doing the right thing even if it’s harder and always put our campers first.

Community is the foundation for everything. Camp is one of the strongest vehicles to creating a healthy community. The whole of our accomplishments exceed the sum of individual contributions.

Courage is essential for taking on new challenges. New experiences are vital for growth. Learning about ourselves, others and the world we live in is what we are about.

Adaptability is essential, we embrace change and use our creativity to find ways forward.

Inclusion is vital to creating a safe space where campers and staff can belong to the community and be celebrated for who they are.

Enthusiasm drives us, we are excited to tackle new things and find ways to play and explore!

Responsibility is a tenant of camp. We are responsible for ourselves, others and our environment.
